This final round of the Epic Battle fired up the crowd surrounding the Virgin Active Challenge Trailer, and after a tense battle, there was so little separating the two top teams that the judges decided to award 2018 race entries to both of them.
Andrew Koen and John Bos, who have known each other for 30 years, made up one of the winning teams, with constant cycling being one of the factors in Koen recovering from a broken pelvis a year ago.
The other winning team comprised of Niven Wood and Thor Hansen. Wood said he had lost 21kgs in three years through his cycling programme and believed that riding in the 2018 Absa Cape Epic would be a “life-changing experience”.
Virgin Active Africa Managing Director Ross Faragher-Thomas said he was delighted to reward two winning teams who had shown they had what it takes in terms of speed, endurance, and climbing ability to complete the Absa Cape Epic.
It has been an epic journey which started in January 2017 and we are proud to have crowned the 2 teams as the Ultimate Virgin Active Epic Battle champions. We also want to give a massive congratulations to the runners-up, John Dalton & Phanus Bekker who both received a SUUNTO SPARTAN ULTRA BLACK CHEST HR.
Lastly, we’d also like to congratulate the 5 lucky draw winners for each Challenge:
Winners aside, more than 1000 Epic Battle riders posted some truly astonishing numbers over the course of the Challenge:

See you again next year,
The Virgin Active team.
