The Virgin Active Epic Battle has its champions!

On the 26th of March, our 3 finalist teams faced off in one final Epic Battle to crown our ultimate champions, who would receive a team entry in the 2018 Absa Cape Epic. Our 3 lucky draw finalists were:

  • Andrew Koen & John Bos
  • John Dalton & Phanus Bekker
  • Niven Wood & Thor Hansen

Our three teams where put through our Virgin Active Pack class simulation where they competed in a high-intensity class using the latest in connected bike tech. This was no ordinary cycle class or battle.

It was a race against time, and each other, to conquer the challenges on the way to the finish line. The 3 challenges they competed in were:

  • ‘Speed Freaks’: Bolt round the track, competing for the highest average speed.
  • ‘Sumo’: Crank up the power in a battle to decide which team outputs the most power per kilogram.
  • ‘Big Burnout’: Go hard in a sprint, with teams competing to hold the best power output.

This final round of the Epic Battle fired up the crowd surrounding the Virgin Active Challenge Trailer, and after a tense battle, there was so little separating the two top teams that the judges decided to award 2018 race entries to both of them.

Andrew Koen and John Bos, who have known each other for 30 years, made up one of the winning teams, with constant cycling being one of the factors in Koen recovering from a broken pelvis a year ago.

The other winning team comprised of Niven Wood and Thor Hansen. Wood said he had lost 21kgs in three years through his cycling programme and believed that riding in the 2018 Absa Cape Epic would be a “life-changing experience”.

Virgin Active Africa Managing Director Ross Faragher-Thomas said he was delighted to reward two winning teams who had shown they had what it takes in terms of speed, endurance, and climbing ability to complete the Absa Cape Epic.

It has been an epic journey which started in January 2017 and we are proud to have crowned the 2 teams as the Ultimate Virgin Active Epic Battle champions. We also want to give a massive congratulations to the runners-up, John Dalton & Phanus Bekker who both received a SUUNTO SPARTAN ULTRA BLACK CHEST HR.

Lastly, we’d also like to congratulate the 5 lucky draw winners for each Challenge:

  • Challenge 1: Beverly Du Plessis won a Uvex Ivo Helmet
  • Challenge 2: Dirk Labuschagne won a pair of Endura Bibshorts
  • Challenge 3: Jono Cloete won a pair of KTM Factor Line shoes
  • Challenge 4: Yacoob Jaffar won a pair of Oakley Sunglasses
  • Challenge 5: Bryan Harding won a Suunto Spartan Sport watch

Winners aside, more than 1000 Epic Battle riders posted some truly astonishing numbers over the course of the Challenge:

  • TOTAL DISTANCE: 736 864km (circling the earth 18 times)
  • TOTAL CALORIES BURNED: 19 830 936Kcal (more than 86 000 Big Macs)
  • TOTAL ELEVATION CLIMBED: 9123km (That’s more than 1000 Mount Everests)
  • TOTAL TIME IN THE SADDLE: 3.7 YEARS (ouch)

We hope that all the Epic Battle Challenge riders had a great time taking part in the competition. Everyone on the Virgin Active SA team watched the results with keen interest, especially the cycling fans in our clubs across the country.

See you again next year,

The Virgin Active team.
